1. 4 AI Tools for Research 💼

I know a number of you guys use AI for research.
I too, have been frustrated with time-consuming literature review and research when I was in college.
Here are a few AI tools for research that I’ve compiled:
a) Elicit
Elicit is a research tool that speeds up the analysis of research papers by automating tasks like summarizing, data extraction, and findings synthesis.
Elicit’s features
With Elicit, you can discover concepts not dig through papers for hours! All powered by AI.
Find concepts from various papers using AI
It offers a large database of over 125 million papers and uses language models for accuracy in data handling, catering to both individual researchers and institutions.
ResearchRabbit is a digital tool designed to enhance literature research through features like paper visualization, author network discovery, and collaborative collection sharing.
Best thing about ResearchRabbit is its visualizations like a network map:
Network map of papers
With such a network, you can discover new papers that are similar to each other.
It focuses on delivering personalized recommendations and intuitive visualizations, significantly streamlining the research process for its users.
c) Jenni
Jenni AI is a tool designed to enhance academic writing, offering features like AI autocomplete, in-text citations, paraphrasing, and source-based content generation.
It’s great for writing papers rather than just research.
Here are its best features:
It's widely used and trusted by over two million academics and institutions, helping users to significantly speed up writing and research processes, with applications ranging from essays to research papers and personal statements.
d) ChatGPT
ChatGPT is adept at summarizing research from multimodal inputs, including PDFs and data files, quickly providing users with essential summaries and insights.
Other LLMs lack in this aspect, which is why I recommend ChatGPT!
Do note that it requires a ChatGPT Plus subscription to access GPT-4, which has the multimodal functionality.
This capability enables researchers to efficiently process and understand diverse formats of information, greatly aiding in the synthesis of complex research material.
2. AI for Southeast Asians 🧔🏽♂️👩🏻👵🏾
Singapore's adding enhancements to make a $70-million LLM for Southeast Asians!
And it’s called SEA-LION (Southeast Asian Languages In One Network).
It will be tailored to the diverse cultures and languages of South-east Asia, filling a gap left by Western-centric models.
Why is this important for Southeast Asians?
Southeast Asians speak a mish mash of languages - not exactly always speaking a single language in a single sentences.
There are many Southeast Asian countries who have not developed LLMs for their own national language.
Languages to be included are:
English
Chinese
Indonesian
Malay
Thai
Vietnamese
Data proportions of SEA-LION
This effort, part of the Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, contrasts with larger models like OpenAI's GPT-4 and Meta's Llama-2.
It's designed to understand and manage context-switching between languages, crucial for multilingual environments like Singapore.
It aims to foster skilled AI talent and industry growth in Singapore.
The new AI project will enhance the Sea-Lion model, which is trained on 11 regional languages and is designed to be smaller, cheaper, and more efficient than existing models.
It’s an open source model - check out its GitHub page if you’re a techy!
3. Day One: How I Journal Using an App 📝
Day One is a versatile journaling app that I've integrated into my daily routine for capturing life's important moments.
Here’s proof:
My Day One Journal’s snapshot
I like it because it offers very practical features that make recording daily experiences both lightning quick and meaningful!
Each morning, I use Day One to document various aspects of my life:
Work achievements: It's where I track my professional progress and milestones.
Personal reflections: The app serves as a private space for my daily thoughts and feelings.
Memories with my girlfriend: I cherish recording the details of our dates and special moments together.
Each entry starts out with a blank page.
BUT!
You can do many things with one entry:
photos
files
templates
suggestions from Siri
draw
video
camera
audio
scan text
scan to pdf
My favorite is the photos function, as it helps me remember what happened on a particular day when I’m looking back in time!
If you took pictures but missed a day, Day One can suggest images using a function called “Today”.
Today helps fill in the blanks with activities on a missed day
This helps me keep my streak and patch up days I missed and want documented!
One of the standout features of Day One is its map functionality!!
It geotags my journal entries, providing a visual and geographical context to my memories. This makes revisiting places and events in my journal a more immersive experience.

Additionally, the calendar view in Day One offers a comprehensive overview of my journaling habits.
It's practical for:
Visualizing my journaling frequency: It helps me maintain consistency in my writing.
Reflecting on personal growth: Seeing my entries over time gives me a sense of accomplishment and progress.
Incorporating Day One into my morning routine has been beneficial. It allows me to start my day with a moment of reflection and planning, setting a positive tone for what lies ahead.
If you’re looking to start journaling and be more present and mindful about your life in 2024, why not try Day One?
There’s a free plan and you don’t need to upgrade if you don’t want to.
I highly recommend it for anyone looking to add more structure and reflection to their daily routine.
